Chattanooga, TN – Per reports, officials emphasized that colder weather often brings an increased risk of house fires and offered several tips to help families stay safe this season.

Residents are advised to keep space heaters at least three feet away from flammable objects and to turn them off when leaving the room or going to bed. For those using fireplaces, a sturdy screen should be placed in front of the fire to prevent sparks, and chimneys should be cleaned annually to avoid potential hazards.

The department also warned against overloading electrical outlets. Heaters should be plugged directly into wall outlets rather than extension cords. Additionally, the use of ovens to heat homes is strongly discouraged, as it can lead to fire hazards or carbon monoxide poisoning.

To further protect their homes, residents are encouraged to test smoke and carbon monoxide detectors to ensure they are functioning properly, replacing batteries if necessary. Candle users are reminded to keep them away from decorations and to never leave them unattended.

Lastly, the department stressed the importance of having a fire escape plan in place for the household and practicing it regularly. These precautions, officials noted, could save lives during the colder months.
