Tennessee – The Tennessee Department of Transportation announced that it will suspend all lane closure activity on interstates and state routes during the upcoming Labor Day holiday travel period. Construction crews will stop closing lanes at noon on Friday, Aug. 29, and resume normal work at 6 a.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 2.

Officials said the pause is intended to provide maximum roadway capacity for the thousands of motorists expected to travel across Tennessee during the holiday. “The Labor Day holiday is always a busy travel time,” said TDOT Commissioner Will Reid.

“We want to ensure that the thousands of travelers using Tennessee’s roadways during this period arrive at their destinations quickly and safely without being impeded by road construction delays. We also want to ensure the safety of our HELP Truck drivers who will be working. Please pay attention, move over, and slow down for all first responders. It’s the law.”

Although no lane closures will be in effect, crews will continue to be present in many construction zones. TDOT reminded drivers that posted speed limits remain in place in work zones and must be followed at all times. Motorists convicted of speeding in an active work zone where workers are present face fines between $250 and $500, along with court costs and the possibility of higher insurance premiums.

To help travelers plan ahead, TDOT encouraged the public to use its SmartWay system for real-time traffic information. The service offers live streaming traffic cameras and up-to-date construction details, accessible at www.TNSmartWay.com/Traffic or by dialing 511.

Officials also reminded drivers to check road conditions before traveling and to avoid distractions behind the wheel. Drivers are urged not to text, tweet, or talk on cell phones while operating a vehicle. TDOT emphasized that following traffic laws and exercising caution will help ensure safe travel for everyone over the busy holiday weekend.
