Tennessee – The Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation has announced a new round of grant funding under the Volkswagen Diesel Settlement Environmental Mitigation Trust, offering $19.4 million to support projects aimed at reducing harmful nitrogen oxide emissions.

The funds, part of the fifth solicitation from the EMT, will be administered by the TDEC Office of Energy Programs. Eligible public, nonprofit, and private fleets in Tennessee are invited to apply for financial assistance to replace or repower medium- and heavy-duty diesel vehicles with all-electric or alternative-fueled models, including those powered by propane, natural gas, or hybrid technology.

The initiative targets older diesel vehicles known for higher emissions. Eligible vehicles for replacement or repower include local freight trucks, port drayage trucks, and transit, shuttle, and school buses with a gross vehicle weight rating above 14,001 pounds and model years ranging from 1992 to 2009.

“Replacing older diesel vehicles and engines with new, alternative-fueled options will reduce air pollutants that threaten public health and the environment,” said TDEC Commissioner David Salyers.

Each applicant may submit only one application and may request assistance for up to 15 vehicles, which can include a mix of vehicle types and fuel systems as outlined in the program guidelines.

Applications must be submitted through TDEC’s online grants management system by June 13 at 4 p.m. CDT. Awards will be announced following a detailed review of all submissions, and selected applicants will begin the contracting process shortly afterward.

An informational webinar will be held on April 11 from 2 to 4 p.m. CDT to walk applicants through the requirements. Attendance—either live or by watching a recorded version—is mandatory for all applicants. The session will cover eligibility rules, project timelines, funding caps, and reporting requirements.

Further information, including access to the application manual and the grant portal, is available on TDEC’s Medium- and Heavy-Duty Vehicles Grant Page.
