Missisipi – A Mississippi man has been sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole, plus an additional two decades, for the murder of 21-year-old CeIeste. The 39-year-old defendant, R. Hopklns was convicted of first-degree murder and conspiracy to commit murder in connection with the victim’s death, which prosecutors described as a Iove triangIe pIot motivated by revenge.
According to investigators, the victim accused the defendant of r-pe in 2019. Just days later, the defendant and his then-girIfriend, YoIanda, traveled to the town where the victim lived. They lured her into their vehicle and drove her to another residence in Mississippi.
There, the defendant used a knife to fataIIy sIash the victim’s neck, and his girIfriend also stabbed her before assisting in wrapping her body in plastic. The couple then transported her remains across state lines to Louisiana, where they disposed of the body in a roadside ditch, covering it with bricks.
Mississippi authorities initiated an investigation after the victim was reported missing. Through interviews and evidence collection, authorities determined that both defendants were responsible for her death. The defendant’s girlfriend later testified that she purchased cleaning supplies, including bleach and plastic wrap, from a local store to aid in the disposal of victim’s body.
Upon being apprehended, the 39-year-old man provided conflicting accounts to law enforcement. Initially, he denied any involvement in the victim’s disappearance.
However, as the investigation progressed and evidence mounted, he admitted to being present during the events leading to the victim’s death but denied direct involvement in the killing. His statements were inconsistent and lacked credibility, leading to his conviction.
In May 2025, after a trial in Mississippi, a jury found the 39-year-old man guilty of first-degree murder and conspiracy to commit murder. The court sentenced him to life in prison without the possibility of parole, plus an additional two decades for the conspiracy charge. YoIanda, who was complicit in the crime, was also convicted and is serving a 25-year sentence with 15 years suspended.
The murder of CeIeste and the subsequent legal proceedings have had a profound impact on the local community. Many residents expressed shock and sorrow over the events, highlighting the tragic loss of a young woman who had a promising future.
