Chattanooga, TN – The Chattanooga Police Department announced the passing of K9 Buck, a 2-year-old Labrador who had served with the department for just over a year. Buck died on September 24, 2025, from medical complications.
According to CPD, Buck showed signs of gastrointestinal upset and lethargy the day before his death. He was taken to his primary care veterinarian, who referred him to a specialist after observing significant abnormalities. It was determined that Buck was suffering from septic peritonitis, which progressed to Disseminated Intravascular Coagulation, a life-threatening complication with a high mortality rate. Despite efforts to save him, Buck did not survive.
Born on June 17, 2023, Buck joined CPD in August 2024 along with his littermate and brother, Skip. Trained in explosives and firearms detection, Buck participated in multiple sweeps to ensure event safety and was also used in investigations involving firearms. Known for his drive, he was often searching, even when others wanted to pet him.
Buck lived with his handler, Master Police Officer Lucas Timmons, and his family. Outside of work, he enjoyed vacations with them and could often be found swimming.
“Our K9 partners are part of our family, both within the department and in the homes of their handlers,” said Chief John Chambers. “Saying goodbye to them is never easy, but losing two in one week is truly heartbreaking. As we mourn the loss of our trusted partners, K9 Buck and K9 Diesel, we also honor their lives and contributions to keeping Chattanooga safe.”
Just a week earlier, on September 17, 2025, K9 Diesel was humanely euthanized after sustaining severe injuries in the line of duty.
The department expressed gratitude to the veterinarians who provide ongoing care for its K9 Unit. Both Buck and Diesel were remembered as beloved partners whose service, loyalty, and dedication will not be forgotten.
