Chattanooga Police Department officers complete IPMBA Police Cyclist Course for specialized bike patrol unit
Chattanooga, TN – Several Chattanooga Police Department officers recently completed the IPMBA Police Cyclist Course, a week-long training program designed to prepare law enforcement personnel for bicycle-based patrol operations in urban environments.
According to the Chattanooga Police Department, the course focused on teaching officers how to safely operate specially equipped mountain bikes while performing patrol duties. Training included navigating heavy traffic, maneuvering through tight spaces, and handling physical obstacles such as curbs, stairs, and uneven terrain. The program is intended to prepare officers for both day and night operations in a variety of community settings.
Officials said the training is part of the department’s broader effort to maintain and expand specialized units within CPD. Bike Patrol is one of more than 30 specialized units operating within the department, providing officers with additional mobility and flexibility in areas where traditional patrol vehicles may be less effective.
The IPMBA (International Police Mountain Bike Association) certification is widely used among law enforcement agencies to ensure officers are properly trained in safe cycling tactics, control techniques, and public interaction while on bicycle patrol. CPD officials noted that completing the course enhances officers’ ability to respond quickly in congested areas and increases visibility within neighborhoods.
The department emphasized that bicycle patrol units often play a key role in community policing efforts, allowing officers to engage more directly with residents, business owners, and visitors while maintaining a visible law enforcement presence. Officers trained in the program are expected to assist with patrol coverage, special events, and other assignments where mobility and accessibility are important.
Chattanooga Police Department also highlighted recruitment efforts alongside the announcement, noting that the department is currently hiring lateral officers and cadets. Officials encouraged interested applicants to learn more about opportunities within CPD and apply through the department’s official recruitment channels.
The department stated that continued investment in specialized training programs like the IPMBA course supports its goal of enhancing public safety operations while strengthening community engagement across Chattanooga.
