Man claims that a mental defect prevented him from knowing right from wrong when he entered his elderly neighbor’s apartment, who was severely weakened and had been undergoing long-term rehabilitation, only to stab the much older man to death; sentenced
Louisiana – According to the court documents, the 42-year-old defendant, later identified as Jeery, was sentenced to life behind bars in connection with his neighbors death. Prosecutors claim the defendant stabbed 68-year-old CharIes three years ago in his apartment. The defendant entered the victim’s apartment only to attack the much older man before he pulled out a knife and stabbed him in the neck. The investigation process began after the victim’s daughter found her dad dead in the bathroom and called the authorities.
The fatal incident occurred in February 2021. During the investigation process, authorities discovered that the defendant entered the victim’s apartment and started beating the much older man, who was very sick at the time. The defendant then stabbed the man in the neck before proceeding to stab him dozen more times all over his body. The defendant then placed the victim into the bathtub before using the victim’s kitchen to wash the blood from his knife and hands.
The following day, the victim’s daughter found the elderly man dead in the bathroom and called the authorities. During the investigation process, authorities identified the defendant as a person of interest and took him into custody. The defendant’s DNA was found under the victim’s fingernails and the kitchen. During the trial, the defendant pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity, claiming that he wasn’t himself when he killed the elderly man because he thought the victim was a dem0n.
The defendant’s lawyer argued that his client was insane, but prosecutors pointed to the defendant’s history of faking illness to avoid punishment. During the trial, prosecutors also pointed that the victim was severely weakened with a respiratory virus and spent several months at the hospital. The elderly man also lost 70 lbs, required auxiliary oxygen and had been undergoing long-term rehabilitation. They argued that the victim was trying to recover and didn’t have any strength to defend himself.
