TDOT has awarded the state’s first Progressive Design-Build contract to expedite the reconstruction of two bridges destroyed by Hurricane Helene
Chattanooga, TN – According to the state officials, the project will focus on rebuilding the Nolichucky River bridges along SR-107 in Greene County and SR-81 in Washington County, with a target date of June 2025 for opening both bridges to traffic.
Enabled by the Transportation Modernization Act, the PDB method involves the collaboration of a Design-Build Team—comprising both a contractor and designer—early in the development phase.
This approach fosters teamwork, accelerates the project through concurrent activities, and enhances risk management and cost control.
The replacement of the SR-107 and SR-81 bridges is essential for the residents of Greene and Washington counties, as the bridges connect the communities of Greeneville, Jonesborough, and Erwin.
The design process, which involves direct input from the contractor, enables swift decision-making and provides clear insights into schedule, cost, and risks.
Preparatory work is already underway, including site cleanup, removal of remaining bridge debris, and acquisition of key materials, all aimed at speeding up the project timeline.
