Tennessee Department of Correction welcomes largest class of new officers since 2020
Tennessee – The Tennessee Department of Correction marked a significant milestone on Friday by graduating its largest class of new correctional officers in over three years. Basic Correctional Officer Training class 510-25, consisting of 111 cadets, completed their six-week program at the Tennessee Correction Academy, ready to begin their duties across the state’s correctional facilities.
Commissioner Frank Strada highlighted the importance of this achievement, noting that it reflects the department’s dedication to strengthening its workforce. “This is the largest class we’ve had since I became Commissioner and it shows our commitment to the public and to our current staff,” Strada said.
He also emphasized a cultural shift within the department, with employees recognizing the career’s potential for growth, competitive pay, and the opportunity to positively impact lives.
Assistant Commissioner of Human Resources and Staff Development Heather Stanford pointed out that TDOC now ranks among the highest-paying agencies in the Southeast for correctional officers. She also acknowledged the vital role of families in supporting the new recruits.
“It’s encouraging to see the families of our new officers celebrating and supporting them. We want them to know that their safety, and the safety of inmates, is always our number one priority,” Stanford stated.
With training complete, the 111 new officers are set to immediately join the ranks of TDOC staff, ready to contribute to public safety and the department’s evolving culture.
