Tennessee Governor Bill Lee announces special session priorities for Education Freedom Act and disaster recovery
Tennessee – Tennessee Gov. Bill Lee issued a special session proclamation ahead of the Tennessee General Assembly’s convening on January 27. Gov. Lee, alongside legislative leadership, has prioritized the passage of the Education Freedom Act, addressing recovery needs for Hurricane Helene, and preparing for future natural disasters.
The session will also focus on public safety measures concerning illegal immigration, in response to the incoming Trump administration’s call for states to prepare for new policy implementations.
A joint statement from Gov. Lee, Lt. Gov. Randy McNally, House Speaker Cameron Sexton, Senate Majority Leader Jack Johnson, and House Majority Leader William Lamberth emphasized the importance of swift action on critical issues. The leaders highlighted widespread support for the Education Freedom Act and a comprehensive relief package for Hurricane Helene and future disaster recovery efforts.
The statement also noted that Tennesseans, regardless of political affiliation, strongly support empowering parents with school choice. Additionally, they stressed the need to assist rural, at-risk, and distressed communities affected by Hurricane Helene, which cannot bear the local cost share of federal relief funds on their own.
The leaders also discussed Tennessee’s responsibility to prepare for the enforcement of federal immigration policies under President Trump, ensuring the state has the resources to support the administration’s efforts from Day One.
