Chattanooga, TN – The Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) announced that all lane closure activity on interstates and state routes will be suspended during the Labor Day holiday travel period.

Construction crews will stop lane closure work at noon on Friday, August 29, and resume at 6:00 a.m. on Tuesday, September 2, providing maximum roadway capacity for motorists.

TDOT Commissioner Will Reid emphasized the importance of the pause, stating it will help ensure travelers reach their destinations quickly and safely without being slowed by construction delays. He also reminded drivers to pay attention and move over for first responders and HELP Truck drivers, noting that it is required by law.

While lane closures will be paused, crews will remain on-site in many construction zones, and drivers are urged to follow posted speed limits. Motorists convicted of speeding in work zones where workers are present could face fines ranging from $250 to $500, plus court fees and potentially higher insurance premiums.

Travelers can stay informed on current construction activity and view live SmartWay traffic cameras online at www.TNSmartWay.com/Traffic, or by calling 511 for statewide travel information.

TDOT also reminded drivers to check travel conditions before heading out and avoid distracted driving by refraining from texting or talking on cell phones while behind the wheel.
