Chattanooga Fire Department employees receive Mayoral Award for winter storm deployment in Hickman County
Chattanooga, TN – Sixteen employees from the Chattanooga Fire Department and the Department of Public Works/Citywide Services were honored with a Mayoral Award for their response efforts during a winter storm deployment in Hickman County in January 2026. The recognition highlighted their support work and coordination during a one-week assignment assisting communities impacted by severe winter weather.
According to the Chattanooga Fire Department, the crews were deployed to Hickman County following the January 2026 winter storm to assist with recovery and emergency response operations. Their duties included transporting essential trucks and equipment and remaining ready to support local emergency services as needed during the recovery period.
During the deployment, personnel worked extended shifts and adapted to limited living conditions while stationed in the area. Officials said the crews slept on cots inside the gymnasium of Fairfield Baptist Church during the week-long assignment. Despite the conditions, the teams continued their operational duties and maintained readiness throughout the deployment.
Before returning home, the group collectively contributed approximately $500 to the pastor of Fairfield Baptist Church as a gesture of appreciation for the hospitality provided during their stay. Fire officials noted that the contribution reflected the group’s gratitude for the community support they received while assisting in Hickman County.
The Chattanooga Fire Department emphasized that the crews performed their duties effectively and represented the city well during the deployment. Officials credited the personnel for their professionalism and willingness to assist another Tennessee community during a period of need following the severe weather event.
Among those recognized from the Chattanooga Fire Department were Battalion Chief Chris LaFerry, Captain John Long, Captain David McBurnett, Senior Firefighter John Hileman, and Senior Firefighter Jonathan Ivey. Additional honorees included personnel from the Department of Public Works/Citywide Services who also participated in the deployment and recovery efforts.
City officials presented the Mayoral Award to acknowledge the teamwork and dedication shown by all sixteen employees involved in the operation. The recognition highlighted the collaboration between departments and the importance of coordinated emergency response efforts during large-scale weather events.
