Chattanooga Fire Department said goodbye to a beloved leader, mentor, and friend during a funeral service at St. Jude’s Catholic Church
Chattanooga, TN – Firefighters from Chattanooga and many other agencies filled the church to honor Captain George Turley, who passed away unexpectedly on December 14, 2024. “His infectious enthusiasm inspired us all, and I can’t think of anyone more dedicated than he was… His absence will be deeply felt,” said Fire Chief Phil Hyman. George, we will miss you. Rest in peace.
Captain George Turley, 58, served 31 years with the Chattanooga Fire Department. On the morning of December 14, he was working out in the gym at Station 16 on Lupton Drive when he suffered a medical emergency. His crew found him unresponsive and immediately began CPR.
Despite their best efforts and continued life-saving treatment at the hospital, Captain Turley tragically passed away. This loss is profoundly felt within the CFD and throughout the community he served.
The Chattanooga Fire Department, along with the Chattanooga Fire Fighters Association Local 820, have provided support to Captain Turley’s family, including his wife, Debbie, and their two sons. The CFD’s Peer Support Team is also available to assist firefighters affected by this loss.
Captain Turley’s passion for the fire service and his dedication to his work left a lasting impact on many. Known for his role as a mentor and leader within the department, he was also a friend to many in the community. His legacy of service will be remembered for years to come.
