Chattanooga’s Walnut Street Bridge renovation project enters critical preservation phase with sandblasting and painting underway
Chattanooga, TN – The Walnut Street Bridge Renovation Project is making steady progress as crews begin a pivotal stage in the bridge’s long-term preservation and restoration.
Work this week will concentrate on the northern span of the historic structure, marking a significant step toward revitalizing one of Chattanooga’s most iconic landmarks.
Beginning Monday and continuing through Tuesday, construction teams will raise protective tarps over span six in half-span increments.
These tarps will form a sealed containment area equipped with vacuum hoses and suction equipment to safely remove old paint and surface materials without harming the environment.
Starting Wednesday, sandblasting operations will begin within the containment zone. This process will be immediately followed by the application of a new three-layer protective coating—primer, intermediate, and topcoat—to shield the bridge’s metal from exposure and prevent rust.
Once span six is completed, crews will move to the next viaduct and repeat the same sandblasting and painting sequence. This cycle is designed to ensure efficiency and minimize the exposure of bare metal.
City officials and project partners expressed gratitude for the public’s ongoing support during this complex infrastructure improvement effort. The renovation aims to preserve the Walnut Street Bridge’s structural integrity and aesthetic charm, ensuring it remains safe and accessible for years to come.
The project remains on track for completion in fall 2026.
