Chattanooga’s Westside transformation moves forward with launch of Phase I construction
Chattanooga, TN – The vision for a revitalized Westside community is becoming reality as construction begins on Phase I of One Westside, a transformative initiative aimed at improving housing and quality of life in one of Chattanooga’s historic neighborhoods.
Backed by a $50 million Choice Neighborhoods Implementation Grant from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, the project is set to deliver 230 new mixed-income housing units in its first phase. Of those, 92 units will directly replace existing homes for current residents of College Hill Courts, ensuring continuity for families as the neighborhood evolves.
“This is more than just construction — it’s about opportunity, equity, and honoring the Westside’s past while investing in its future,” said city officials in a statement. “Big things are happening on the Westside, and this is just the beginning.”
Aerial images recently released by the City of Chattanooga show significant progress at the site, as crews work to bring new housing, infrastructure, and community amenities to life.
Design planning is already underway for Phase 2 of the development, while construction of the James A. Henry Community Hub — a centerpiece for local services and programming — is more than halfway complete. Once finished, the hub will serve as a key gathering place and resource center for Westside residents.
The initiative represents a collaborative effort among local, state, and federal partners, community leaders, and residents. It is being guided by the city’s housing policy team, led by Nicole Heyman, along with ongoing input from the Westside community itself.
“This project is only possible because of the commitment of our residents and the strength of our partnerships,” city leaders emphasized.
One Westside aims to go beyond bricks and mortar, addressing housing, education, health, and economic opportunity in a comprehensive effort to revitalize Chattanooga’s Westside while preserving its legacy.
