Tennessee Senate recognizes 134th Air Refueling Wing members for heroism and Distinguished Flying Crosses
Tennessee – Eleven members of the Tennessee Air National Guard’s 134th Air Refueling Wing, based in Knoxville, were honored by the Tennessee Senate on April 14 for their heroic actions during Operation True Promise, resulting in the awarding of Distinguished Flying Crosses.
The recognition took place in the Senate chambers, where the Airmen were commended for performing combat air refueling missions in contested Middle Eastern airspace.
Their work, involving refueling U.S. Air Force F-15E Strike Eagles and other coalition aircraft while under direct enemy fire, played a crucial role in extending the flight time of combat aircraft as they intercepted missiles and drones during an attack on April 13, 2024.
Senate Joint Resolution 150 was read and presented to the Airmen by Senator Becky Massey of the 6th District, representing Knoxville and Knox County. Tennessee Governor Bill Lee and Lieutenant Governor Randy McNally also congratulated the Airmen before the Senate ceremony.
“These Airmen exemplify the highest standards of courage and professionalism,” said Brig. Gen. Lee Hartley, Tennessee Assistant Adjutant General-Air. “Their actions not only safeguarded lives but also demonstrated the strength of our commitment to our allies and global stability.”
The Distinguished Flying Crosses were awarded to the Airmen during a ceremony at McGhee Tyson Air National Guard Base on December 7, 2024. The DFC, one of the U.S. military’s highest honors, is awarded for acts of heroism or extraordinary achievement in aerial flight.
