Chattanooga, TN – According to the police officials, recognizing that students may walk, bike, or take the bus to school, the department shared key safety tips to help parents guide their kids.

For children who walk to school, parents were encouraged to remind them to use sidewalks and crosswalks, look both ways before crossing streets, and stay alert by avoiding distractions such as phones or headphones.

Biking safety was also highlighted, with recommendations for children to wear helmets, follow traffic rules, signal turns, ride in the same direction as traffic, and exercise caution at intersections.

Regarding bus safety, the police department advised parents to explain the importance of waiting for the bus at a safe distance from the road, using the handrail when boarding and alighting, and remaining seated while the bus is in motion.

The police also stressed the need to discuss emergency situations. Children were encouraged to know what to do if they felt unsafe or encountered unusual circumstances and to ensure they could contact their parents or another trusted adult if needed.

General awareness was another crucial topic. Parents were reminded to talk to their children about always being aware of their surroundings and adhering to any safety rules established by their school or local authorities.
