Chattanooga, TN – The Chattanooga Police Department’s Traffic Unit, in coordination with local partner agencies, honored the life and legacy of World War II veteran Sergeant Sanford G. Roy with a solemn escort back to his hometown nearly 80 years after his death.
Sergeant Roy, a Chattanooga native, was killed in action on April 8, 1944, during a bombing mission over Germany. For decades, his remains went unidentified—until last summer, when advances in forensic science allowed officials to finally confirm his identity and begin arrangements to return him to his birthplace.
On what marked a historic and emotional homecoming, law enforcement officers and local agencies joined together to accompany Sergeant Roy on his final journey back to Chattanooga. The escort was a symbol of deep respect and gratitude for the soldier’s ultimate sacrifice.
“This was a profoundly moving experience for all involved,” said members of the Chattanooga Police Department. “It was an honor to stand with our community in welcoming Sergeant Roy home.”
Community members, veterans, and local officials gathered to pay tribute to Roy, whose service had remained unrecognized for decades until now. His return serves as a powerful reminder of the enduring commitment to never forget those who served and gave their lives for their country.
Sergeant Roy is now laid to rest in his hometown, where his legacy will be preserved and remembered.
