Florida – In a case that the County Sheriff Lopez described as ‘one of the worst child abuse cases’ in the county’s history, a 25-year-old parent, L. Rhides,, has been sentenced to life in prison for the murder of his child. The defendant was convicted of multiple charges, including first-degree murder, aggravated child abuse, and multiple counts of child abuse related to the severe mistreatment of his other five children.

In 2022, deputies responded to a distress call from a local motel where the defendant and his partner, 25-year-old Blanca, were residing with their several children. The woman reported that their 6-year-old child had drowned in the toiIet. However, upon arrival, deputies found the child unresponsive with his head in the toiIet and no signs of drowning. The boy was transported to a hospital, where he was placed on life support due to a brain bleed and lacerated liver. He succumbed to his injuries a few days later.

Investigators determined that the child had been beaten after being caught drinking from the toiIet, a behavior likely driven by extreme thirst due to a lack of available drinks in the room. According to the Sheriff’s Office, the victim’s mom initiated the beating, followed by her partner, who repeatedly punched the chiId multiple times with a closed fist.

Two of the couple’s other children corroborated this account, stating that their parents became enraged upon discovering the boy drinking from the toiIet and proceeded to beat him. The investigation also revealed that the couple’s other children, ranging in age from 10 months to 5 years, showed signs of physical abuse and neglect. Marks on their bodies matched the imprint of a shoe found in the room, which had dried bIood on the bottom. The children were often punished by being forced to stand in the corner and beaten with the shoe.

Following the investigation, both defendants were arrested and charged with first-degree murder and multiple counts of child abuse. In December 2024, a grand jury indicted the on these charges. During court proceedings, it was revealed that the defendant had been off his medication for schizophrenia at the time of the incident. The victim’s mom remains in custody, facing similar charges.

The surviving children were placed together in a foster home, where they are receiving care and support. The case has prompted discussions about the importance of mental health treatment and the need for vigilant child welfare monitoring. Sheriff Lopez emphasized the severity of the abuse, stating that ‘this is one of the worst cases of child abuse in the County’s history.”
