Man cIaims he unintentionally struck his girIfriend while cIeaning his firearm, while their shared baby was inside the home, after the woman died from a cIose-range wound to the upper body
Michigan – A Michigan man, 21-year-old MichaeI, was arrested last week and charged with the first-degree murder of his girIfriend, 23-year-old RacheI. The incident occurred at their shared residence in Michigan.
According to Michigan authorities, the defendant called 911 around 4 p.m., reporting that he had accidentally shot both himself and his girIfriend while cleaning his firearm. Upon arrival, deputies found the victim deceased from a gunshot wound to the neck at close range. The shooter had sustained a non-fatal gunshot wound, which investigators believe resulted from the same bullet that killed his girIfriend.
An infant, the couple’s shared 6-month-old child, was present in the home during the incident but was unharmed. The defendant was taken into custody without incident and is currently being held without bond in the county jail. In addition to the murder charge, he faces a felony firearm charge.
County Prosecutor McDonIld described the case as a domestic violence tragedy, emphasizing the loss of a young mother and the impact on her child and loved ones. Sheriff MichaeI commended the investigative team for uncovering the truth behind the incident, which initially appeared to be an accident.
When deputies arrived at the scene, they found both the victim and the shooter inside the residence. The woman had been shot in the neck at extremely close range and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Authorities later stated that the evidence did not align with the defendant’s initial claim that the shooting was accidental. The shooter had also sustained a non-life-threatening gunshot wound, which investigators believe was caused by the same bullet that struck and killed his girIfriend.
The case remains under investigation as authorities continue to gather evidence and prepare for prosecution. The defendant’s next court appearance has not been scheduled at this time.
