The responding officers found the victim with a single gunshot wound and rushed her to the hospital, where hospital staff pronounced her dead. The responding officers also made contact with the victim’s boyfriend and other roommates.

During an interview with local news outlets, the victim’s sibling, Jesica, reportedly said that her sister’s boyfriend reportedly disobeyed the victim’s requests not to bring or keep a weapon int he home. The woman also said that her sister would still be alive if the man respected her sister’s demands.  The woman reportedly said that the man’s ‘carelessness, arrogance, irresponsibility and neglecting her sister’s wishes of never having a gun in her house, she’s gone forever’.

Authorities said the defendant was taken into custody and booked, but has since bailed out, adding he has no criminal history. Prosecutors are still deciding what charges would be appropriate for the defendant following the woman’s death, local news outlet KY3 reported. He allegedly left the loaded gun in the couple’s bedroom, where the victim’s 2-year-old son got a hold of it.

According to California authorities, a gun lock is a simple way to keep your firearm secured. “When you have it stored like this — this gun will not fire because you cannot out ammunition into it, when you don’t have a lock like this, it can be fired, it can be loaded,” said police officer Luke reportedly said. The victim’s family launched an online fundraiser to collect money for funeral expenses.
