Texas – Texas woman, 22-year-old Janira, was taken into custody and later charged with multiple charges, including capital murder and tampering with evidence, in connection with her child’s death. Authorities say first responders found the baby in the bathroom, not breathing, only for an autopsy to later reveal that the child was born alive and suffocated on fluids, such as amniotic fluid. The defendant told investigators that she did not know she was pregnant. The young woman also told investigators that she messaged another person inside the home to come and help. The woman also claimed the newborn did not cry or make any noise.

The investigation process began earlier this year after the 911 caller told the dispatcher about an unresponsive baby. First responders found the baby in the bathroom not breathing. The baby, who was not names, was pronounced dead at the scene. Investigators interviewed the baby’s mom and decided to get a full autopsy to determine the baby’s cause of death. Last week, the medical examiner revealed that the baby was born alive and breathing, but suffocated on fluids such as amniotic fluid and other foreign fibers.

Prosecutors say the Texas woman ‘intentionally and knowingly caused the death of her newborn baby.’  According to the affidavit, the mother of the baby stated she was alone in the bathroom at the time of birth. She claimed she was unaware of her pregnancy and believed she needed to have a bowel movement, leading her to sit on the toilet. The affidavit notes that the mother observed the baby, felt lightheaded, and was unable to stand up from the toilet. She admitted to using nail clippers to cut the umbiIical cord.

The 22-year-old woman told Texas authorities she used her phone to text another person in the residence for assistance. She also claimed the baby did not cry or make any noise, according to the affidavit. When other occupants of the residence were interviewed, they reported that the mother had never informed them of her pregnancy, nor did they hear a baby cry. The affidavit further states that the mother had previously told another resident she was not pregnant and claimed to be having regular menstrual cycles. The 22-year-old defendant is being held on $1 million bail, court records say.
