Chattanooga, TN – As of Friday, May 2nd, several road closures are in effect in Chattanooga due to ongoing events and activities this weekend. These closures will continue through the weekend, so travelers are advised to plan ahead.
For the Gran Fondo Hincapie bike race, Houston Street is closed between E MLK Blvd and E 11th Street. This closure began on Thursday, May 1st at 5 PM and will continue until Saturday, May 3rd at 6 PM. Traffic is being detoured via Lindsay Street.
In addition, E MLK Blvd is closed between Lindsay Street and Houston Street starting at Noon on Friday, May 2nd. This closure will also last until Saturday, May 3rd at 6 PM. It’s important to note that the Nightfall Closure and the Gran Fondo Hincapie event will overlap on Friday night. However, Lindsay Street will remain open, allowing traffic to pass through both closures.
For those in the area or planning to travel, here’s what to expect on Saturday, May 3rd. The Gran Fondo Hincapie race will begin at 8 AM, with cyclists escorted by Chattanooga Police Department officers starting from E Martin Luther King Blvd. The route will proceed down Market Street, crossing into North Shore and continuing along Cherokee Boulevard. Officers will be stationed at key intersections to direct traffic and ensure the safety of participants.
A secondary route will take cyclists through Manufacturers Road, with officers present at both HWY 27 ramps and the entrance to Renaissance Park. The first cyclists are expected to return to Chattanooga by 10:00 AM.
Cyclists on the Gran and Medio Routes will return to the city through Tiftonia, traveling via Cummings Road, Wauhatchie Pike, and Cummings Highway, before turning onto Old Wauhatchie Pike. Officers will be stationed at the intersection of Old Wauhatchie Pike and Scenic Highway to direct traffic and allow cyclists to safely travel downhill on Scenic Highway and then onto the right, eastbound lane of Cummings Highway. Cyclists will continue their journey through Broad Street, W 33rd Street, Alton Park Blvd, Market Street, and W 12th Street, before reaching Houston Street and the finish line on E Martin Luther King Blvd.
Most cyclists are expected to complete their routes by 4:00 PM.
Additionally, Nightfall, which occurs every Friday from May 2nd through July 4th, will cause some closures. From 3 PM until Midnight on Friday, May 2nd, Cherry Street will be closed between E MLK Blvd/Georgia Ave and E 8th Street. Access to the parking garage from E 8th Street will remain open.
From 5:30 PM until Midnight, closures will also include Martin Luther King Blvd between Broad Street and Lindsay Street, Market Street between 10th Street and 8th Street, and Georgia Ave between E 10th Street and Patten Parkway. All street parking within these closure areas will be restricted.
For the Odd Market: May Mayhem event on Saturday, May 3rd, E 14th Street between S Holtzclaw Ave and Gulf Street will be closed all day. A detour will be in place via Main Street.
The Frazier Festival on Saturday, May 3rd will lead to the closure of Frazier Ave between Market Street and Delmont Street from 9 AM until 7 PM. The NorthShore Electric Shuttle will not operate within the closure area but will use Veterans Bridge to access the NorthShore Parking Garage stop. No vehicle traffic will be allowed between Veterans Bridge and Market Street, and through traffic will need to use 4th Street as a detour.
Motorists are encouraged to plan alternate routes and follow the instructions of officers on site to avoid delays. These closures will affect several areas of Chattanooga throughout the weekend, so please stay updated on local road conditions and event schedules.
