Chattanooga, TN – Hamilton County drivers should prepare for temporary traffic disruptions on I-24 West starting at midnight on July 8, 2025. The Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) announced that contract crews will close the I-24 West entrance ramp from Germantown Road (Exit 183) for approximately eight weeks to construct noise walls at the site.

A clearly signed detour will guide drivers traveling on North Terrace toward Germantown Road as follows:

  • Turn left onto Germantown Road

  • Turn left onto South Terrace

  • Continue to South Moore Road

  • Turn left onto the South Moore Road bridge

  • Turn left onto North Terrace

  • Merge left onto the newly constructed I-24 West entrance ramp across from Marlboro Avenue

Motorists are urged to exercise caution, anticipate delays, and follow instructions from uniformed police officers stationed to assist with traffic control and enforcement.

The project timeline is weather-dependent, and any delays caused by inclement weather or unforeseen events will result in rescheduling.

TDOT reminds drivers to use available travel resources such as the TDOT SmartWay Map for construction updates and to call 511 for statewide travel information. The department also emphasizes safe driving practices, including never texting, tweeting, or talking on a cell phone while driving.

Additionally, drivers are reminded of Tennessee’s Move Over Law, enacted in 2006, which requires motorists to yield the right of way to stopped emergency and maintenance vehicles. Violations carry penalties of up to 30 days in jail and fines reaching $500.
