Tennessee residents impacted by Tropical Storm Helene eligible for sales tax refunds
Tennessee – Survivors of Tropical Storm Helene who received federal assistance may still qualify for sales tax refunds on certain post-disaster purchases, according to the Tennessee Department of Revenue.
The natural disaster sales tax refund program offers eligible individuals the opportunity to recover up to $2,500 in Tennessee state sales tax paid on major appliances, residential furniture, or building supplies bought after the storm. The program is available to those who received financial assistance from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) for the repair, replacement, or reconstruction of a primary residence damaged or destroyed during the storm.
Eligible items include:
-
Major appliances priced at $3,200 or less
-
Residential furniture priced at $3,200 or less
-
Residential building supplies priced at $500 or less
Applicants must wait until all qualifying purchases have been made before submitting a claim. Only one claim is accepted per household, and applications must be filed within one year from the date listed on the applicant’s FEMA decision letter.
Claims can be submitted online or by mailing a paper application to the Department of Revenue.
This refund initiative is part of the state’s continued effort to ease the financial burden on families and individuals recovering from natural disasters.
