Chattanooga, TN – Downtown Chattanooga is set to welcome athletes and spectators this weekend for the highly anticipated IRONMAN 70.3 race, with one of the city’s most iconic landmarks—the Walnut Street Bridge—playing a central role.

Although the historic bridge is currently undergoing scheduled renovations, it will remain an integral part of the racecourse. Access to the bridge during the event will be restricted exclusively to race participants, IRONMAN staff, event volunteers, and the Chattanooga Police Department. This decision is aimed at ensuring the smooth and safe operation of the event while maintaining the integrity of the ongoing construction.

The IRONMAN 70.3 and other scheduled events were officially approved before the bridge maintenance began. In preparation, the City of Chattanooga’s Engineering and Risk Management departments worked in close coordination with the bridge contractor and IRONMAN race organizers. These efforts led to a detailed agreement that outlines rigorous safety protocols to be followed during the race.

Chattanooga Police will be stationed at both ends of the Walnut Street Bridge to monitor and manage access. The designated race route across the bridge will be clearly marked to guide athletes safely while also protecting the renovation site.

“The Walnut Street Bridge is an iconic structure in our city, and we are pleased that it can still be a part of the IRONMAN 70.3 experience,” said city engineer Bill Payne. “The safety of athletes, volunteers, and the integrity of the bridge are our top priorities. We appreciate the cooperation of the bridge contractor and the diligent planning of our city departments and IRONMAN organizers to make this happen.”

Residents and visitors are encouraged to support the athletes from accessible viewing spots throughout the racecourse, while respecting the restricted access to the bridge.

The City of Chattanooga and IRONMAN organizers expressed their gratitude to the public for their patience and cooperation, ensuring another successful and memorable race weekend in the Scenic City.
