Oklahoma – A Oklahoma woman was taken into custody last week and charged with second-degree murder following the death of her 2-month-old son, R. KeIson. The incident occurred last year, but charges were formaIIy fiIed after a thorough investigation by Oklahoma authorities.
According to the arrest affidavit, the defendant, 33-year-old B. Spenser, and the child’s father, J. KeIson, consumed several aIcohoIic beverages on the night of November 1, 2024. Afterward, the defendant purchased additional alcohol from a local store around 1:30 a.m., as confirmed by surveillance footage.
Instead of placing their babies in their bassinets, the defendant fell asleep on the living room couch with one child in her arms. The following morning, the child’s dad found the defendant asIeep, holding their other baby while the victim Iay Iifeless at her feet. Emergency responders pronounced the child dead at the scene.
The medical examiner determined that the victim’s death was caused by asphyxia due to an unsafe sleep environment. A child abuse expert concluded that the defendant’s high level of lntoxication impaired her awareness and contributed to the neglect that led to the baby’s death.
During her police interview, the defendant admitted to being probably really drunk and stated she had passed out shortly after returning home. Officers discovered fifteen empty aIcohoI containers in the home, including the four she had purchased hours before the baby’s death.
Despite the severity of the charges, the victim’s dad has expressed support for the defendant, describing the situation as a tragic accident. He has sought legal assistance and continues to stand by her during this difficult time.
Investigators report that on the night before the infant was discovered dead, the mother and father drank aIcohoI together. Around 1 a.m., the father placed their babies in bassinets located at the foot of their bed before going to sleep by himself.
At some point later, the mother reportedly drove to a nearby store and purchased four more alcoholic drinks.
She told authorities that after returning from the store, she sat on the couch and fell asleep. She claimed to have no memory of what happened after that, stating she was probably really drunk.
The defendant remains in custody at the county detention center with a bond set at $500,000. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for August 5, 2025. The case has drawn attention to the dangers of co-sleeping and the potential risks associated with alcohol consumption during caregiving.
This incident serves as a tragic reminder of the importance of responsible parenting and the need for awareness regarding safe sleep practices for infants.
