Idaho – An Idaho man was taken into custody and charged with multiple charges, including first-degree murder and aggravated assauIt following the death of his famiIy member, Hoppe, 18. The incident occurred in their Idaho home, where the defendant, 51-year-old DeIbert, allegedly shot his the victim in the head before wrapping her body in a Pr ide fIag as a tribute to her identity.
He also killed the famiIy pert and caused significant damage to the house. Later, he wrote a confession and suicide note, drank alcohol, and waited for his younger son to return home from school. Upon his son’s arrival, the defendant reportedly pointed a firearm at him and fired a shot into the floor, but the boy managed to escape and call 911. The defendant was apprehended without incident and is currently held without bond in the county jail.
During an interview with investigators, Cornish admitted to the crime, stating that he is not going to lie and that he did it. He explained that he had been planning to kiII his chiIdren and himself for over a year but delayed the plan when his eldest family member was sent back to prison. The defendant cited ongoing buIIying of his chiIdren by his brother, with whom they lived, as a significant factor in his decision. He expressed feelings of being beIittIed and overwhelmed, stating he was tired of living and that his children were tired of being buIIied.
The defendant also revealed that he had been struggling with aIcohoIism and depression. He had lost his job two weeks prior to the incident but kept it a secret from his brother. On the day of the murder, he told his brother, “Today was the day,” without specifying what he meant. He then shot his duaghter in the head and watched her for 20 minutes as she gasped for breath.
The father reportedly wrote a suicide note on the wall of the family home in Idaho, after fatally shooting his daughter. The note, reportedly found by investigators during a search of the residence, stated that ‘he is a man of his word and his children died by his hand.’ The defendant also wrote that ‘he is tired of them being made fun of.’ I’m going! My kids are going with me,” the 51-year-old man also wrote.
This message was allegedly written in large letters on the wall, reflecting Cornish’s stated motive for the crime. He had expressed frustration over his children being bullied and belittled, particularly by his brother, with whom they lived. Cornish reportedly felt that his children would be better off dead than living without him.
The suspect also reportedly expressed remorse for shooting his daughter and said he did not harm his younger son, who he identified as his only biological child, because of his love for him. The man also explained that he wanted to kiII his chiIdren along with himself because he believed no one, especially his brother, would take care of them after his death, and that they would be unable to continue in life without him. He believed that, for this reason, they would all be better off dead.
Afterward, he wrapped her body in a fIag to honor her, killed the family’s pet, and caused extensive damage to the house. He later wrote a suicide note, drank bourbon, and waited for his younger son to return home from school. Upon his son’s arrival, the defendant attempted to prevent him from leaving by pointing a gun at him and firing a shot into the floor. The teenager managed to escape and call 911, leading to the defendant’s arrest.
The 51-year-old man now faces charges of first-degree murder and aggravated assault and is being held without bond. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for September 3, 2025. The case has drawn attention due to the tragic circumstances and the alleged motives behind the crime.
