Experienced higher education leader joins Tennessee Higher Education Commission
Chattanooga, TN – The Tennessee Higher Education Commission announced the appointment of Dr. Robert M. Smith to the Commission. Governor Bill Lee officially appointed Dr. Smith in early November, recognizing his extensive experience in higher education, public policy, and leadership.
Dr. Smith, president emeritus of Slippery Rock University in Pennsylvania and chancellor emeritus of the University of Tennessee at Martin, has earned a reputation as a respected higher education leader. He previously served as Interim Executive Director of THEC, providing stability and direction during a crucial time for the agency.
“Dr. Smith’s leadership and vision will be invaluable as we continue to support Tennessee’s colleges and universities,” said Dr. Steven Gentile, Executive Director of THEC. “His understanding of our state’s higher education system and commitment to improving educational opportunities for Tennesseans will be critical in addressing challenges and opportunities.”
In his role on the Commission, Dr. Smith will contribute to shaping policies and initiatives that benefit students and institutions across Tennessee.
Dr. Smith attended his first THEC meeting in his new capacity on November 7, 2024.
