Chattanooga, TN – The Chattanooga Fire Department’s Green Shift crews responded to two separate fires on Sunday, Dec. 15, 2024, addressing emergencies in both a residential duplex and an apartment complex.

**Duplex fire on Elmendorf Street**
Shortly after noon, firefighters were dispatched to the 2200 block of Elmendorf Street for a residential fire in a duplex. Smoke was visible coming from the eaves. Crews quickly extinguished the fire, which was contained to one bedroom.

Investigators revealed that a nine-year-old child had been playing with a candle, resulting in burns to his leg and foot. The child was transported to the hospital and is reportedly in stable condition. The American Red Cross is providing assistance to the displaced residents.

**Apartment fire on Runyan Drive**
At 1:30 PM, crews responded to an apartment fire at the Arbors at Signal Mountain on Runyan Drive. The fire started when an elderly resident attempted to address a fireplace issue by moving a smoldering log onto his balcony, where it rekindled and ignited the deck.

Firefighters extinguished the flames in about 10 minutes and rescued two dogs. The American Red Cross is supporting the affected resident.

No major injuries were reported in either incident. Fire officials reminded the public to practice caution with candles, fireplaces, and other fire hazards during the holiday season.
