Tennessee attorney general announces settlement in NCAA lawsuit over student-athletes’ NIL rights
Tennessee – Tennessee Attorney General Jonathan Skrmetti announced that a bipartisan coalition of states, led by Tennessee, has reached a settlement in principle in its lawsuit against the National Collegiate Athletics Association (NCAA).
The lawsuit, filed by the attorneys general of Tennessee, Virginia, Florida, New York, and the District of Columbia, challenged the NCAA’s NIL Recruiting Ban, arguing that it imposed anticompetitive restrictions in violation of federal antitrust law.
A federal judge ruled in favor of the states, blocking the NCAA’s enforcement of the ban during the litigation.
Skrmetti stated that the settlement lays the foundation for a permanent resolution that will protect student-athletes’ rights.
The agreement ensures that the NCAA cannot reinstate its NIL Recruiting Ban, allowing student-athletes to benefit from name, image, and likeness opportunities during the recruitment process.
