Tennessee – In alignment with the U.S. Army’s sweeping transformation initiative, the Tennessee Army National Guard’s 278th Armored Cavalry Regiment has been selected as one of only three National Guard units nationwide to reorganize into a Mobile Brigade Combat Team (MBCT). The move marks a significant step toward building a faster, more agile force that can rapidly respond to global conflicts or domestic emergencies.

MBCTs are designed to be lighter, quicker to deploy, and more cost-effective than traditional Armored Brigade Combat Teams (ABCTs). With improved mobility and modernization, these units are positioned to support both combat operations and humanitarian missions with increased efficiency and speed.

“As one of the first National Guard units to transform, we’re proud and ready to meet today’s evolving threats,” said Maj. Gen. Warner Ross, Tennessee’s Adjutant General. “This transition directly supports the Army’s vision for a more agile and lethal force, and there is no better unit than the 278th to lead this effort.”

The reorganization will allow the 278th to conduct more of its training within Tennessee, maximizing the use of in-state facilities and reducing the need for out-of-state travel. This change not only enhances training opportunities but also keeps Soldiers closer to their homes, helping improve retention and recruitment. Additionally, being based in-state positions the unit to respond more quickly to natural disasters or other emergencies across Tennessee.

This marks the third major transformation in the unit’s modern history. In 2006, the 278th transitioned to a Heavy Brigade Combat Team, and in 2018, it became an Armored Brigade Combat Team. This latest transition reflects both the Army’s evolving battlefield strategy and the continued adaptability of the 278th.

“While we honor our cavalry heritage, this change will ensure our Soldiers are equipped and ready to better serve our state and nation,” Ross added. “The 278th has a proud legacy of answering the call, and this transition is the next step in continuing that tradition in a way that reflects the realities of modern warfare.”

Headquartered in Knoxville, the 278th traces its lineage back to the 3rd Tennessee Infantry of the 1880s. With distinguished service in World Wars I and II, the Korean War, and modern-day missions, the unit has built a reputation for resilience, professionalism, and commitment. Today, as the largest unit in the Tennessee National Guard, the 278th remains a cornerstone of the state’s military readiness.
