Public Works Department announces updated repair plan for Heritage Landing Drive sinkhole
Chattanooga, TN – The Public Works Department released an update on the Heritage Landing Drive sinkhole repair, outlining a new repair approach and an expedited project timeline.
A recent camera inspection of the underground drainage line revealed that the damage was more extensive than initially expected. The affected area extends beyond the visible sinkhole and runs beneath a large seven-foot wastewater pipe. To avoid potential damage to this critical sewer line, engineers shifted to a specialized repair method.
City staff are finalizing the design, which is expected to be completed by mid-September. The project will then proceed through an emergency bid process, reducing the typical bidding period by about three months. Officials anticipate the bid process will take 3–4 weeks, with a contractor selected in mid-October. The bid will also factor in the availability of specialty contractors required for the work.
“We are committed to a safe and efficient repair that not only fixes the immediate problem but also protects our critical infrastructure,” said City Engineer Bill Payne. “Our team is working diligently to prepare all the necessary bid documents, and we are confident the emergency bid process will help us mobilize a contractor and reopen the road as quickly as possible.”
Construction is currently estimated to take 4–6 months once a contractor is on site. A more precise timeline will be established after the bid process is complete and the contractor’s schedule is reviewed.
To maximize efficiency, city staff also plan to inspect additional drainage lines in the area while the road is closed. Updates will continue as more information and a clearer construction timeline become available.
