Tennessee authorities investigating officer-involved shooting that left 1 dead, TBI says situation escalated “for reasons still under investigation”
Tennessee – The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI) is investigating a fatal officer-involved shooting in Knox County that occurred Friday night following a traffic stop and vehicle pursuit involving the Knox County Sheriff’s Office.
At the request of 6th Judicial District Attorney General Charme Allen, TBI special agents were called to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident, which left one man dead and no deputies injured.
According to preliminary information released by authorities, deputies attempted to stop a vehicle near Strawberry Plains Pike and John Sevier Highway just after 9:30 p.m. after observing the driver speeding and failing to maintain his lane.
The driver, identified as Andrew Seth Henderlight, born 03/19/1987, reportedly refused to stop, leading deputies on a pursuit through Knox County.
The chase ended when Henderlight pulled over in the 7800 block of Kodak Road in Knoxville. Authorities said the situation then escalated for reasons still under investigation, resulting in three deputies firing their weapons and striking the driver.
Henderlight was pronounced dead at the scene. Officials confirmed that no law enforcement officers were injured during the incident.
TBI agents said they are conducting an independent investigation to determine the full sequence of events leading up to the shooting. This includes gathering physical evidence, reviewing available records, and conducting interviews with witnesses and involved personnel.
The agency emphasized that it serves only as a fact-finding body in officer-involved shooting investigations and does not determine whether the use of force was justified. That determination is ultimately made by the District Attorney General who requested the investigation.
Once the investigation is complete, findings will be submitted to the District Attorney General’s Office for review and further legal consideration.
TBI also noted that it does not release the identities of involved officers in these types of cases. Any additional details regarding law enforcement personnel are handled by the responding agency.
The investigation remains ongoing as authorities work to piece together the events that led to the fatal encounter.
