The Chattanooga Fire Department introduced its first Safe Haven Baby Box at Fire Station Six on Bonny Oaks Drive
Chattanooga, TN – According to the officials, the Safe Haven Baby Box reportedly provides a secure and anonymous option for mothers who need to surrender newborns safely. The installation represents a significant step in supporting mothers and ensuring the welfare of vulnerable infants.
The Safe Haven Law, established more than two decades ago, allows mothers to surrender their babies at designated safe locations like fire stations without legal repercussions. However, the stigma and fear associated with surrendering a child have led some mothers to consider unsafe alternatives. The new Safe Haven Baby Box offers a discreet, secure way for these mothers to anonymously surrender their child, addressing these concerns directly.
When a baby is placed inside the box, a delayed alarm is automatically triggered, alerting first responders and prompting the nearest firefighter to retrieve the child immediately, safeguarding the newborn’s well-being.
This initiative by the Chattanooga Fire Department highlights its commitment to community safety and the protection of the city’s most vulnerable. The department’s dedication has brought this essential resource to the area, offering a compassionate solution for mothers in crisis and a safe path for infants in need.
