Chattanooga, TN – According to the statement, the ceremony celebrated Polk’s life and legacy, recognizing his dedication to Tennessee and his role as the 11th President of the United States.

Born on November 2, 1795, in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina, Polk spent much of his life serving Tennessee.

He was a member of the Tennessee Militia, served in the Tennessee State Legislature, represented Tennessee in the U.S. Congress, and was later elected as the 9th Governor of Tennessee.

Polk’s presidential term from 1845 to 1849 saw significant expansion and transformation for the United States.

Following tradition, a representative of the sitting president places a wreath on the tomb of past presidents to honor their service. Brig. Gen. John Kinton, Director of the Tennessee National Guard’s Joint Staff, represented President Joe Biden at the event.

Kinton, joined by Rachel Helvering, President of the President James K. Polk Home and Museum, laid the wreath on Polk’s tomb and delivered remarks on Polk’s enduring impact on Tennessee and the nation.
