Tennessee driver license applicants from non-participating states must provide MVR starting January 10, 2025
Chattanooga, TN – According to the state officials, beginning January 10, 2025, individuals applying for a Tennessee driver license who currently hold licenses from California, Connecticut, Illinois, Kentucky, Maine, Nevada, Oklahoma, Vermont, or West Virginia will be required to present a Motor Vehicle Record from their previous state.
The MVR must be issued within 30 days prior to submission at a Tennessee Driver Services Center and will accompany other required documents during the application process.
This requirement applies only to residents from states that do not participate in the American Association of Motor Vehicle Administrators’ State-to-State (S2S) Verification Service. The S2S system allows 41 participating states, including Tennessee, to electronically access a driver’s complete history, eliminating the need for an MVR.
The S2S service helps improve road safety by sharing real-time driver information, such as convictions and license withdrawals, reducing fraud, and streamlining the license application process.
Non-participating state residents should secure their MVR before visiting a Driver Services Center to ensure a smooth transition to a Tennessee license.
