Law enforcement leaders address misinformation on Tren de Aragua in Chattanooga
Chattanooga, TN – Chattanooga Police Chief John Chambers, Hamilton County Sheriff Austin Garrett, and Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI) Director David Rausch recently appeared on local radio to address concerns and misinformation surrounding the Venezuelan-based gang Tren de Aragua (TdA) and its potential impact on Chattanooga.
TdA, a transient criminal organization, operates by moving across Tennessee and other parts of the United States, establishing operations where conditions are favorable. Local officials emphasized that efforts are underway to ensure Chattanooga and Hamilton County remain inhospitable for their activities.
According to Chief Chambers, there is currently no significant evidence of local gang affiliations with TdA in Chattanooga. However, a recent joint investigation involving the TBI, Chattanooga Police Department, Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office, and Homeland Security Investigations uncovered a human trafficking operation. Four individuals were arrested, including a confirmed TdA member. Officials clarified that the operation appeared to be transitory, with the group passing through Chattanooga.
The investigation highlights the importance of proactive measures and community involvement in combating criminal activity. Residents are encouraged to report any suspicious behavior to the CPD’s non-emergency line at 423-698-2525 or dial 9-1-1 in emergencies.
Law enforcement leaders also emphasized that criminal investigations are focused solely on illegal activity, not ethnicity. They stressed the importance of avoiding stereotypes, noting that speaking Spanish or being part of the Latino community does not imply affiliation with TdA.
