TDEC announces household hazardous waste collection event in several counties on March 15
Tennessee – TDEC has announced that a mobile household hazardous waste collection event will take place in DeKalb, Hamblen, and Roane counties on Saturday, March 15. The event encourages Tennesseans to dispose of hazardous materials safely and responsibly at designated drop-off locations. Residents from any county are welcome to participate.
TDEC Commissioner David Salyers emphasized the importance of the program, stating that it provides a convenient way for Tennesseans to properly dispose of hazardous waste while demonstrating a commitment to environmental protection.
Drop-off locations include the DeKalb County Community Complex at 712 South Congress Boulevard in Smithville from 8 a.m. to noon, Hamblen County Solid Waste at 3849 Sublett Road in Morristown from 8 a.m. to noon, and the Roane County Recycling Facility at 215 White Pine Road in Harriman from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Since its inception in 1993, the program has helped more than 373,000 Tennessee households dispose of over 25 million pounds of hazardous materials. More than 1,500 one-day collection events have been held throughout the state.
Accepted items include cleaning fluids, pesticides, swimming pool chemicals, mercury thermometers, fluorescent lamps, lithium batteries, aerosols, adhesives, brake fluid, and medical needles in sturdy containers. Items not accepted at the collection sites include ammunition, explosives, alkaline batteries, paint, electronics, and empty containers.
