Chattanooga, TN – According to the officials, Blue Shift companies responded to a residence on Sunset Strip Street. Firefighters initially observed slight smoke and discovered the home filled with smoke upon arrival. A dresser fire in the bedroom was quickly extinguished.

The victim, who suffered smoke inhalation and burns to the face, was taken to the hospital. Investigators revealed that the fire was sparked when the victim, who was smoking while using oxygen, ignited the oxygen machine and the nearby dresser.

Responding units included Squad 19, Ladder 19, Engine 11, Engine 16, Battalion 3, and CFD Investigations, with assistance from CPD and HCEMS.

The CFD emphasizes that smoking around home oxygen is extremely dangerous. Medical oxygen can cause explosions if exposed to flames or sparks, and even when the oxygen is turned off, it remains a fire hazard.

Increased oxygen levels in the air, on furniture, clothing, and hair can facilitate the rapid spread of fire.
