Chattanooga, TN – According to the state officials, this annual campaign, sponsored by the NFPA for over a century, aims to educate the public on the critical role of functioning smoke alarms in saving lives.

NFPA statistics show that smoke alarms reduce the risk of dying in a home fire by 54%, yet three out of five home fire deaths occur where there are no smoke alarms or where they are not functioning.

Chattanooga Fire Marshal Chief William Matlock encouraged the community to embrace this year’s FPW theme. “Working smoke alarms can make a life-saving difference in a home fire, giving people the time to get out safely,” he said.

The department is committed to spreading awareness through simple, actionable steps to ensure every home is properly equipped.

The Fire Prevention Bureau recommends the following safety tips:

  • Install smoke alarms in every bedroom, outside each sleeping area, and on every level of the home, including the basement.
  • Ensure alarms are accessible for all family members, including those with disabilities.
  • Test smoke alarms monthly by pressing the test button.
  • Replace smoke alarms every 10 years.

By following these guidelines, residents can significantly improve their safety in case of a home fire.
