Educator, who had been teaching for 40 years and even received the Teacher of the Year award, slapped a student in the face because of the hoodie they had worn to class
The 61-year-old educator, who had been teaching for 40 years and even received the Teacher of the Year award, reportedly slapped a student in the face because of the hoodie the student had worn to class. A press release from the school says the confrontation was sparked by the student’s hoodie but did not provide more details.
The teacher can be seen grabbing the backpack of a student before pushing them against the wall. He then goes on to point a finger at them and lands a slap across their face. Earlier in the video, the civics teacher appears to chase the victim down the hallway while a student and school staff member looked on.
Police officials said the former Indiana teacher, Michael Hosinski, was taken into custody after he was caught slapping a student. The 61-year old man, who was once called ‘Teacher of the year,’ was taken into custody on a level 6 felony for battery, according to the Sheriff’s Department.
A press release from the school officials alleged how the civics teacher hit a Jimtown High School student during a verbal altercation that took place back on February 25. On Tuesday, the community school board declared that Hosinski would be allowed to retire early after having worked in the district for 40 years, reports PEOPLE.
The educator reportedly confronted the student about a hoodie sweatshirt they had worn to class. The teacher inexplicably made physical contact with the victim, according to the district.
In security footage obtained by WTHR, the 61-year-old can be seen grabbing the backpack of a student before pushing them against the wall.
He then goes on to point a finger at them and lands a slap across their face. Earlier in the video, the civics teacher appears to chase the victim down the hallway while a student and school staff member looked on.
After finally getting a hold of the student, he appears to be grabbing them by their jacket with both hands before holding them against the wall and grabbing their arms in an attempt to lead them down the hallway.
The student collapses to the ground as an adult arrives at the scene. this is when Hosinski retreats back towards the room he had exited from at the beginning of the video.
Officials said the slap caused the student’s head to strike the wall and the student suffered visible injuries because of it, according to the statement. It added that the student was immediately treated by the medical staff.
The school district released the following statement:
“The safety of students is our highest priority and greatest responsibility. When anyone, including a teacher, undermines that priority and responsibility, swift action must and will be taken to safeguard Jimtown students, anything less cannot be tolerated.”
School administrators promptly contacted the Sheriff’s Office and the Indiana Department of Child Services right after the incident.
Apparently, the Indiana Department of Education’s teacher licensing officials were also made aware of the incident. “BCS has and will continue to fully cooperate with all investigations, as well as offering supportive services to the student and the student’s family,” said the district before announcing that Hosinski “is no longer employed by BCS.” Moreover, he is not even allowed on school grounds. “
Per reports, this isn’t the first time Hosinski has been condemned for his conduct as an educator. He was reportedly accused of violating students rights with religious propaganda and telling his students that “Hillary [Clinton] and [Barack] Obama are criminals, President Donald Trump is great, and Democrats are liars.”
