Chattanooga, TN – Per reports, the Chattanooga Police Department observed the World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims, paying tribute to the lives lost and affected by road traffic accidents. Each year, an estimated 1.35 million people globally lose their lives in road crashes, with traffic injuries now the leading cause of death for individuals aged 5-29.

This day serves as a solemn reminder of the devastating impact of road traffic accidents on families, friends, and communities. The department called on the public to commit to safer roads, greater awareness, and protecting lives.

As part of the commemoration, the department shared several road safety tips aimed at reducing the risk of accidents:

  • Always Wear Your Seatbelt: Seat belts are a simple and effective way to reduce injury risk in a crash. Whether driving or riding as a passenger, buckling up is essential.
  • Look Out for Pedestrians and Cyclists: Drivers and pedestrians alike should remain alert and follow traffic signals to ensure the safety of all road users.
  • Drive Defensively: Staying aware of surroundings, maintaining a safe speed, and avoiding distractions such as texting while driving are critical for road safety.
  • Wear a Helmet: Cyclists and motorcyclists are encouraged to wear helmets to protect themselves in the event of a fall or collision.
  • Be Mindful of Road Conditions: Drivers should adjust their speed and maintain a safe following distance during adverse weather conditions, such as rain, snow, or fog.
  • Don’t Drink and Drive: Individuals are urged to avoid driving under the influence by using a designated driver, public transportation, or rideshare services.

The Chattanooga Police Department emphasized the importance of these measures in creating safer streets and urged the community to honor those lost in road traffic accidents by committing to responsible driving and road safety awareness.
